Water Meter Assemblies
General Information Clean water is a valuable resource to which Americans have become dependent for all aspects of personal, recreation, and business activities. The water originates from below ground or surface water sources. Water utilities process and distribute the water via underground water mains.
Utility companies charge customers for the water usage. To monitor and meter the water usage, water meters are used to record this information. The water meter is generally located near the property line of the end-user's facility. The meter is installed in a concrete vault for protection and accessibility.
There are several types of water services:
Domestic Water: Potable water for drinking and general use. Fire Service: Used for fire prevention systems including standpipe and sprinkler systems. Fire/Domestic Service: Combination domestic and fire service. Irrigation: Used for landscape and irrigation water service.
There is a specific water meter for each service application. Park® offers a pre-engineered, pre-tested MeterVault System for every commercial application:
Positive Displacement Meter This type of meter contains a hermetically sealed register, magnetic drive and positive displacement measuring chamber. This meter measures low flow typically associated with residential and light commercial. The available sizes are 5/8” through 2”
Turbine Meter The turbine meter utilizes a vane turbine element in the water flow stream which rotates as water flows through the meter body. The turbine meter is designed for applications where the flow is consistently moderate to high. Turbine meter sizing range from 2” through 16”.
Combination Meter The Combination Water Meter is designed for applications where fire service and drinking water supplies are fed by a single line. The design of the Combination Meter combines low-flow sensitivity of a disk meter with high-flow capabilities of a turbine meter for an extremely wide flow range. The Combination Meter is designed to measure both domestic and fire service water usage through a single line. This meter is required to be Underwrighters Laboratory (UL) listed and Factory Mutual Approved for fire service.
Compound Meter The compound meter is a combination of a positive displacement meter and a turbine meter. The compound meter is designed for high metering accuracy where extremely large variations in flow is anticipated. Typical applications include schools, hospitals, hotels, shopping centers, and other installations where flow demands vary from fractional gallons to large peak-hour demands. Compound meter sizing range from 2” through 8”.
Mag Meter Electromagnetic Water Meters (also referred to as Magmeters) are designed for accountability measuring of potable and non-potable cold water. Magmeters are used on special applications such as municipal water service, reclaim water raw sewage, or when the meter location is difficult for maintaining the meter. The Magmeter has a flow tube design that is completely non-intrusive and is maintenance-free, with no moving parts to impede the flow. Other meters can clog and can require frequent maintenance when used in liquids with suspended solids.
Propeller Meter Propeller meters are designed for accountability measuring rather than revenue service. Flows must be fairly constant within a limited range, where low flow never occurs. General uses include industrial or utility applications with sizes ranging from 3” to 36”.
